ABSTRACT

The electronics and radar systems that MBDA Italy designs and produces plant in Fusaro (NA) are key components of extremely sophisticated command and control systems for the Defence. They have to ensure high performance and reliability, in view of the importance of their mission.
The electrical and functional tests of the devices and systems of MBDA Italy is carried out systematically in all phases of the product, from research and development to production, both at the level of sub-assemblies and final assembly, also in simulated environmental conditions (temperature, vibration, and so on).
The board devices include radar for searching and tracking (Seeker), the data link for telemetry and guidance, inertial navigation unit (IMU), the proximity fuze, electromechanical actuators, and the power unit (EPU). Each of these devices requires its own calibration measurements and tests, in addition to integration testing. A measure which is particularly important for equipment manufactured by MBDA Italy is the antenna testing. MBDA Italy has the state of the art testing stations for the measurement of indoor antennas and antenna systems from the S-band up to millimeter bands. They are compact range test stations that reproduce, in an anechoic chamber, classic far-field antenna measurement and Near-field stations that instead operate a much more thorough test of the antenna, detecting the near-field and from this by obtaining the three-dimensional pattern of the antenna, the distribution of lighting, the field on the opening, and also allowing the antenna diagnostics. This type of testing is essential for modern phased-array antennas that require factory calibration individual.

 

 

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Roberto VITIELLO graduated with honours in Electronic Engineering at the University Federico II in 1985. After a brief experience of fellow college, he started working as a designer of antennas at the Selenia, then Alenia and then Selex. Since 2001 he has spent in the Engineering Division of MBDA Italy where he still works as a project manager for research and development funding and as Technical Advisor in the field of antennas and electromagnetism. He is currently responsible for three research projects funded by the Ministry of Education, the MED and the Campania Region, respectively. He is author of over 25 technical publications in national and international field, mainly in the field of electromagnetism.

 

Enzo CARPENTIERI graduated in Electronic Engineering at the University Federico II in 1983. After a brief stage at the Naval Institute of Naples, he began working as a designer of RF equipment at the Selenia, then Alenia, and Selex. Since 2001 he has spent in Division Engineering MBDA Italy where he still works as a technical manager of research and development. He is currently in charge of research projects in the field of antennas scanning electron beam. He is author of numerous technical publications in national and international field.
